Ngaiire and the National Live Music Awards

On Tuesday 29 November, every capital city across the country will hold an event to commemorate the inaugural National Live Music Awards (NLMAs). The purpose of the NLMAs is to celebrate and reward the many performers who contribute to a huge live music scene in Australia. There will be 51 awards presented across the country, divided by State, with eighteen national awards presented at a Sydney gala event held at renowned jazz club, The Basement.

People from each city bar Sydney are invited to come to the awards FOR FREE. That's right. FREE. Melbourne, Hobart, Darwin. Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra and Perth all free. If you want, you can choose to donate $5 to Support Act (a very cool organisation that helps musicians struggling financially). The Sydney event is a very reasonably priced gala event ($39 for GA and $74 for Industry tickets) where the National Awards will be handed out.

And, each city will hold live performances. Naturally. Now, two important notes about the NLMAs:

  • One category - the R&B and Soul Category - is almost exclusively women of colour.
  • 44% of nominees are either female or have a permanent female member in the band

The NLMAs come after a successful run of a smaller live music awards show in 2014 and 2015 hosted by music, culture and arts website the AU Review.  Larry Heath is the founder of AU Review and the NLMAs and gave Music Love a very savvy run down of the philosophy behind the awards and also provided insights and advice for anyone who wants to perform live. You can read that here.

Future soul (and super progressive) artist Ngairre will be among the many acts performing at the awards, and she is up for a few awards herself (Live Voice of the Year - such a cool award). She spoke with Music Love about the NLMAs.

[Live music] is the essence of what I do. The community and the culture it creates around me as an artist is imperative to my survival in any city.
— Ngaiire, Future soul artist

How important has live music been to your success as an artist?

It's the essence of what I do. The community and the culture it creates around me as an artist is imperative to my survival in any city.

You’ve been nominated for live voice of the year, what do you do to look after your voice?

I really should do more. If I were looking after it I'd be drinking less, doing more vocal warm ups and resting more. Now I feel like guilty. Thanks guys.

What advice would you give aspiring artists in Australia who don’t know how to get onto a stage to perform?

Figure out what you want and work from there. Always know that you don't have to rush things. Our artistry is very much connected to our wellbeing as people so be patient but diligent.

Who are you favourite Australian women in music ?

I recently met Clare Bowditch. I love how supportive she is of us as artists. I remember being so inspired by her being at the forefront of getting musicians baggage allowance on Virgin over the line. And she looks like Liv Tyler's long lost Elvin sister.

How important is your independence as an artist – I have heard you turned down quite a few opportunities in order to remain so?

I don't think I intentionally did. I think they were just the wrong situations  for me. I'm quite open to having support from labels or other similar bodies but I have also really enjoyed being able to have the space and time to grow as an artist without the pressure created by a third party. I think it's ok to compromise some of your control but it depends on what you want as an artist and what boundaries you're happy to create within.
