Wendy Matthews' advice to artists: stay true to who you are, no matter what anyone says

It was 1982 in Los Angeles when Australian Glen Shorrock was recording his debut album Villain of the Peace. He met twenty something Canadian singer Wendy Matthews who had been travelling across North America and Mexico busking after leaving home at just 16. Wendy had settled in LA, working as a session vocalist and jewellery maker (which she still is today - more on that later). Glenn asked Wendy to sing as a background vocalist on his album. It was that moment that would lead Wendy Matthews to Australia's shores on his subsequent six-week Australian tour, where she would stay and become the musical icon that we are all proud of today.

Australian Women of the ARIA Awards from 1987-2015

The countdown is on between now and Wednesday 23 November when the red carpet will be rolled out at The Star, Sydney to celebrate the Australian music industry. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the awards, the first of which was held in 1987 with Sir Elton John at the Sheraton Hotel Sydney.
